Worn Keys

Worn out keys are a major cause of lock and key failure in cars.  Some cars such as late model Toyota's are very sensitive to a worn key.  The Toyota lock uses split wafers that slide along only half the width of the key blade.  As the key gets worn the wafers can get stuck and not slide along the top of the key blade, instead falling down and causing the lock to jam up.

Carrying a heavy bundle of keys on the same ring as your car key can cause the locks to wear.  Just about all car locks are made from diecast metal.  The die casting is easily worn by a key especially if it has a heavy weight hanging off the end of the key head.

If your key is worn your best bet is to get a new key cut.  Sometimes it will require cutting a key to code which will bring your key back to the original specifications
